If you are looking for that once-in-a-lifetime hunting companion and family pet, look no further than Iowa Pointing Labs. Our nationally recognized training program is designed to meet your dog’s specific needs. All of our training is done on a one-to-one basis and special attention is given to teaching you all aspects of your dog’s training. Our training program is designed for all gundog breeds and consists of:
We use the famous method of association to teach the puppies how to walk, sit, fetch, and kennel up. This method is called clicker training—a system of positive reinforcement that is scientifically proven to teach behavior to animals and even humans, who then remember the behavior taught years later. Puppies’ behavior is reinforced. They are rewarded for carrying out positive behaviors, and as they grow older and become more aware, they feel more in control of their actions. Because they know a pleasurable outcome will follow a desirable behavior, they become enthusiastic about engaging in positive behavior.
Our Headstart program includes;
- Clicker training
- Fetch – starts with a ball, progresses to bumpers and then frozen bird to introduce the puppies to birds early
- Puppy walks, walks out in fields and terrain that is found during hunting
- Introduction to gunfire, later in training food is added after to reinforce that gunfire means food/praise
- Introduction to dog-safe water sources later in the headstart training if available
For you, this is a vital beginning that allows you to get a good start on a well-trained hunting dog and pet. Having this start can make the transition to a new home less stressful with tools you can carry into your home.
The Puppy Program is a Bird and Gun Introduction class. Dogs must be at least 96 days old. Bird and Gun Introduction is the key step in starting a companion hunting dog. This program is designed to bring out and enhance your canine companions’ natural instincts.
We will spend time working on retrieving birds starting with dead birds, moving up to clipped wing birds and finally live flushed birds. We will evaluate the pointing skills in the pointing breeds but the true point will be refined in a later program once your puppy’s drive has been allowed to come out.
During the different phases of the birds, we add in the different phases of the firearms ranging from a starting blank gun to a 12 gauge. This is done in progressive steps and amounts over the phase of two weeks to develop a positive gun and bird relationship.
All dogs in this program are worked on a check cord to develop a retrieve. All phases of this program are positive and fun to bring out the drive and natural desire of each individual puppy.
The Advanced Program:
This program is designed to give your canine companion one on one attention. We will establish on and off leash control of your canine companion. This will give you control of your canine companion both at home and in the field. We will establish a whistle recall and quartering skills.
We will force fetch your canine companion for a finish to heel delivery and hold. Pointing breeds will also work on pointing and whoa commands. After training we will have you come in with our trainer to have them go over commands and how to continue the progression of your dog at home.
Private lessons available for any phase of your personal training. Special programs for particular areas of performance.
